Wednesday Night, Co-Contributor and host of Angry Seafood, ChrisC notified me that he was being blocked by the WordPress Anti-Spam plugin, Bad Behavior. It wasn’t just him. I tried to log in to my own blog and was blocked, here, at my Humor Blogging site, and on my test sites.

The message told me that I might be a spammer, or spreading viruses. It’s my site!

I disabled Bad Behavior, and enabled moderation for first time commentators. This morning, I had two comments from first-timers. I feel bad about that, not just because I know how annoying that is, but also because I was away from the computer the entire evening.

Fortunately, Mark Rayner of the Skwib notes that this was a more universal problem. It seems that anyone using BB needs to install an update.

I apologize for the frustration and inconvenience of moderating first time commentators Sinister Dan and Allen Boss. I will have the Bad Behavior plugin updated at Lunch today.

Thanks to Mark for the tip.

Bad Behavior 2.0.11 now playing nicely

I’ve installed the newest version of BB on all my sites, and things seem to be working smoothly. I have always liked Bad Behavior, because it stops the spam before it posts.

Akismet, Spam Karma, and others flag spam based on certain requirements, after it attempts to post the spam messages. This works as an excellent backup to BB, but can be very time consuming for anyone worried about looking for false positives (Legitimate comments that get flagged), if it’s the sole method of preventing spam.

With BB, very little gets through to Akismet, and the amount that makes it past that stage is easy to manage.

Now that Bad Behavior is working again, I can continue to enthusiastically endorse its use.

In case you were wondering where my site has been, I suffered a dread DOS attack. I set the previous post up using my FTP client to upload the audio, shut it down, and finished the post. Then I began to get hundreds of emails pouring in to my inbox all with weird-names-at-radioactiveliberty.com and all saying that delivery service failed to other email addresses that I’ve never heard of. They had to shut down my account to keep the server from crashing.

The admin at MidPhase told me that they were getting thousands of emails a minute from my domain.

RT – Chief Mongress sent an email of concern. The rest of you suck!

Except for Von. I got the computer of doom up and running. I had to reinstall windows. Thanks to Von for a little added assistance, and info. He’s the man. The rest of you suck, except for the Chief Mongress.

Now my computer has no programs on it, except for Firefox. Oh, here’s a trip – It was updating and it told me to “Upgrade” to Idiot Exploder 7. Bwahahahaha! I’m not falling for that shit again. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have an anti-virus program to install. I kinda need one of those.

Microsuck has been badgering me to upgrade to Idiot Exploder 7 the last few days, so against my better judgment, I went ahead and gave it a try. It took a ridiculous amount of time, and I finally got to a part where it told me to restart my computer. I did.

…

…

“Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select ‘r’ at the first screen to start repair.”

I can do what with the what now? What the Hell are they talking about? Why did they delete a file I need? What “Setup CD-ROM?”

Thanks Microsoft for deciding I should only have 2 functioning computers now instead of 3.

On one computer of mine, I see this header, which is the way it’s supposed to be.

Radioactive Header Calligrapher
[Click to embiggen]

On the other two computers I have, I see it this way, which is OK, but just not as cool.

Radioactive Header Tahoma
[Click to embiggen]

So, I have a few questions. First, which way do you see it? Second, if I’m using Firefox on all three computers, why does only one show it with the Calligrapher font? It doesn’t even matter which browser it is. Regardless of the browser it shows in Calligrapher on one computer and Tahoma on the other 2.

I’m just wondering how many of you actually get to see it in all it’s glory.

I’ve been getting hammered by spam today. I just deleted 106 spam comments from the last 2 hours, and another 86 deletd at lunchtime, and another buttload that I deleted at 10AM. In all I would say over 250 spam comments in the last 12 hours.

This can make it difficult to filter out the false positives, like comments by RichJ, which, for whatever reason end up in the spam filter. If you’re noticing your comments not getting posted, I would suggest registering at the site, and logging in to comment. I’m not declaring registration as a new policy, just suggesting it as a possible way to avoid getting trapped in the filter.

So far, I’ve only noticed this happening with RichJ, and trackbacks from Basil’s Blog, and I think there was one other before. Of course, it’s also possible I accidentally deleted a non-spam, so if you’re commenting and wondering where you’re comment went, try registering. It’s on the right sidebar in the “Meta” box, just below the Technorati profile link.

I just finished an upgrade to WordPress 2.0.1. Please let me know if things no longer work properly. I just tried posting this, and a plugin I had tried to use must not be compatible, because it ate the post when I attempted to save it. I deactivated the plugin, and it seems to be working again.

UPDATE: I was having a little buggy problem when updating. I’m just testing to see if’n I got rid of it. I did the upgrade over again, and this time I deleted all the files instead of overwriting them. I hope it worked.

DAMN! Nope, it still does it.

Hmm. Well it didn’t that time. That makes it about 50% of the time it doesn’t work.
