Elitists Strike Back
Why Americans Hate Democrats—A Dialogue
The unteachable ignorance of the red states.
By Jane Smiley
Perhaps this article should be called “Why Americans hate Condescending Elitists Like Me – A Diatribe.” Smiley begins by giving herself “license” to critisize the “Red” states by stating that “I grew up in Missouri and most of my family voted for Bush,” and then goes on a rant about the ignorance of middle America. Here are some excerpts:
“I suppose the good news is that 55 million Americans have evaded the ignorance-inducing machine. But 58 million have not. (Well, almost 58 million—my relatives are not ignorant, they are just greedy and full of classic Republican feelings of superiority.)… Here is how ignorance works: First, they put the fear of God into you… A corollary to this point is that they make sure you understand that Satan resides in the toils and snares of complex thought and so it is best not try it… The history of the last four years shows that red state types, above all, do not want to be told what to do—they prefer to be ignorant. As a result, they are virtually unteachable… Lots of Americans… don’t know which end is up. Can the Democrats appeal to such voters? Do they want to? The Republicans have sold their souls for power. Must everyone?”
It would seem to me that elitist, condescending attitudes sre the reason Americans don’t like those on the left, and this hit-piece is a perfect example. Smiley is so out of touch that she falls right into the elitist trap of “We need to do it for you because you are too dumb to do it for yourself. Isn’t that precisely why liberals think that the government is the solution, and not the private sector? Isn’t that exactly the motivation behind scaring seniors into thinking that they will lose their social security. Thank you Ms. Smiley for epitomizing the condescending attitude that we can’t do it for ourselves
