I’m a day late by now, but anyhoo. Better late than never, right?
I think it’s so fitting that we celebrate the day that we said, “Screw you! We’re going to form our own country,” rather than celebrating the day that we actually formed it, many years later. Not only did it involve the time to fight the Revolutionary War (It’s a quagmire! We can’t win!) but after that, we tried the Articles of Confederation (the American people don’t want democracy!) before finally drafting and ratifying the US Constitution, and Bill of Rights. It wasn’t until then that the United States of America was officially born.
I think it’s great though, that we celebrate this day that we said, “Enough. No more tyranny. We will choose our own way.” It’s so much more dramatic than celebrating the day that we all said, “OK, I think we have something we can all agree upon.” It’s just so American.
Here’s some crappy camera phone video I took of the fireworks:

And another. The very end of the display. It started pouring, sheets of rain, the very second the fireworks stopped. Weird.

Thanks to George W. Bush, 26 million Iraqis can now celebrate the same kind of achievement.
Take that, liberal media!
