I Broke It You Bought It
I break things… A lot. Sometimes it’s purely an accident, but ususally it’s because I’m such a hothead, and I do it on purpose. It seems natural that I would wish to profit off my destruction, or at least recoup my losses a bit.
I’m not the only person that breaks things, and I bet other people would like to profit off their destruction as well. It’s the American way.
So, I was thinking of creating a site, in the mold of Ebay, that caters to those people. It would be called, “I Broke It, You Bought It,” or something like that. It would be comprised entirely of broken items that are up for auction.
So why not just sell your broken stuff on Ebay? Think about it, if you’re looking on Ebay for a shop vac, you’re probably going to skip past the ones that are admittedly broken. It’s just not going to work, but there are people out there who are actually willing to take broken merchandise. They just aren’t being catered to.
That’s where my new e-commerce site idea comes in. Everything for auction is broken. Some stuff might be more broken than other stuff, but it’s all broken. So when you’re looking for a shop vac, you know the ones you are browsing are broken.
It’s not everyday that someone comes up with a briliant idea like this. I promise not to forget you all when I’m a gazillionaire.
There is one thing that bothers me, though. How will I keep people from selling perfectly good items on the site? It will be easy at first, but how will I do it once the site explodes with popularity? If people sell perfectly good, unbroken stuff, that would be a disaster. That would defeat the whole purpose.
I may have to go back to the ol’ drawing board on this idea.

Easy. You just implement a rating sytem opposite of Ebay’s. Someone sells a perfectly good item on your site, and they get a low rating. The more perfectly good items they sell, the lower rating they get. The more completely broken items they sell, the better rating they get. Get it?

I’ve always got some sort of plan. I’m looking at projects at sourceforge to see if there is something that will fit what you want. If I don’t find anything, then I’ll have to come up with a real plan…
