Disorganized House, Disorganized Mind

July 21st, 2007 by Fiar · 5 Comments ·

A scattered house makes a scattered mind. This is made most obvious when the state of disarray happens quickly.

For most people, a disorganized house is something that happens over a great deal of time, or remains the status quo for long enough that it is just accepted as normal. It’s when you’re not used to so much disorganization that you realize just how much the state of the home effects the state of the mind. It’s that drastic change that makes the difference in noticing the relationship between the two.

How do I know this?

Recently I’ve had a major project of redoing two rooms in the house. We painted and carpeted the rooms, and got some new furniture. All that is good. It’s amazing how much more relaxing it is to be in those rooms now that they don’t look like horse crap.

Of course, there’s a downside. I had to move all the contents of half the house into the other half of the house. It’s like squeezing 10 pounds of shit into a 5 pound bag. In other words, some things had to go. In some cases it was obvious. If it was being replaced by the new furniture, then it needed to go.

To help get Jan on board with eliminating junk from our lives, it was only fair that I participated as well. I decided to trash my desk. I didn’t merely take it out and put it to the curb. I destroyed it. It felt damn good too.

It’s almost like moving though. Nothing is where it belongs. Things are packed into boxes. I don’t know where things are. At this point most of the things we need or use most are back where they belong, but not everything. I still don’t have a new computer/desk/work area arrangement put back together yet. I know what I’m going to do, but it’s just taking time to piece it all together again.

The main computer that I use at home is disconnected and sitting upstairs, along with various other computer parts and supplies. It’s taken a toll on my ability to post anything at all. I can’t focus enough to post anything, and it’s obvious that it’s because things aren’t where they belong.

I had intended to just keep rolling along like usual, and use my laptop to post new stuff. I have plenty of ideas scattered around in my head, but I just can’t seem to concentrate enough to sit down and type them out. Hopefully, in the next few days I’ll at least have my desk area back together. Then I’ll get back to writing funny stuff and ridiculing stupid people.

I wanted this “fascinating” story of my life lately to serve a purpose, at the very least.

If you feel like it’s difficult to focus and concentrate, if you find yourself constantly wondering how to even get started on doing the things you want or need to do, take a look around your home and your office. Is it as disorganized as your mind seems to be? The good news is that you can fix both by clearing the useless junk out of your home. When you do that, you’ll find that your mind is suddenly clearer as well.

It’s not always easy. You’ll find that the reason you have things you don’t need is that you’ve convinced yourself that you do need them, but once you let go, you’ll find your home more relaxing, and your mind more relaxed.

I’m not the expert to offer the “how to” tips on decluttering and organizing, but Unclutterer is a great resource to help you get started.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Things should be back to “normal” again soon.

I keep trying to take the worthless garbage out of the house, but I keep coming back.

While it drives me insane, some people are more productive surrounded by disorganization. I used to know something about the psychology of it, but the insanity drove it away. May the lack of clutter be with you.

Are you basically saying that you’re a slob???

    Dear Wyatt,

Yes, at the moment I am a slob, but I do not work well that way. It’s driving me insane. I am an order freak in a house of disorder. No wonder I’m so neurotic!
