Term Limits?
Right Wing News has an article on term limits. There’s a dilemma with term limits though. It would require the people affected by term limits to vote for them. I don’t see that happening any time soon.
I favor term limits, because I feel that incumbents have way too much of an advantage, not just for financial reasons, but also partly because of the nature of people. Basically, a representative has to do a seriously crappy job to lose an election as an incumbent candidate.
When the current officeholder loses, it is essentially because he/she was fired. Most people just don’t like change. Plenty of people aren’t particularly satisfied with their job, but yet do not seek new employment, until it becomes unbearable. It’s just human nature to stick with the known quantity.
In other words, the very nature of humans being adverse to change is one of the major deciding factors in any given election. Unless the representative is truly unbearable, the incumbent will win. As an added bonus, it’s the incumbent who would have to vote in support of voting himself out of a job.
Not likely.
