Why blog? Because it’s fun. If that’s not your motivation, quit now. Seriously. If you are blogging because you think you’re going to “make a difference” or “change the world,” then give up because that’s not going to happen. Quit. You are blogging for the wrong reasons.
Perhaps I’m being too cynical, or too harsh, but I look at it this way, if it’s not interesting to me, then it’s not interesting to anyone else either. If your topic is being chosen by the interests of someone else, then it’s not going to be interesting, even to the person that actually is interested in that topic.
Think about when you’re struggling to make conversation with someone. One topic after another falls flat, then suddenly, someone says something and you’re off talking for an hour and a half. What happened. You found something that interests you, and you were able to elaborate extensively.
I’m the most interesting person I know, and my favorite blog is this one right here. I’m not kidding. I think it’s perfectly normal too. Last night I spent an entire hour and a half reading my own blog, going through the archives.
It makes perfect sense to me. I post about the things that I think are interesting, or funny, or stupid, outlandish, angering, or whatever. My blog is about me, and the things I think. So why shouldn’t I find it interesting? It’s entirely about things that interest me.
Mike, feels like there’s just not much left to say anymore. He’s always mostly been about politics and news, with some religion in there too. There’s also the occasional Penn State item. Well, Mike, if it really isn’t fun anymore, then quit. If you just don’t know what to say, think about what DOES interest you, and go off on it. Just let it rip.
The way I figure, if it interests me, it will interest others too, so long as I express myself coherently. After all, take any given person, two things are unlikely:
A. They are so bizarre and eccentric that they have no interests to share, and
Two: They are so bizarre and eccentric that they do have interests, but no one else shares thos interests. Therefore, it’s most likely that others share the same interests.
When blogs first started, they were primarily an online journal. Somehow, the notion came about that they were no longer personal diaries, but were instead about homemade news and editorial. I like the idea of the all-in-one. Too much about driving the kids to school is probably boring to everybody. All politics all the time is boring too, but somewhere in between is interesting.
Express your beliefs, and let readers get to know who you are. Don’t restrict yourself to a set in stone format. Just do what comes naturally. Do what interests you, and others will enjoy it as well.

Thanks for the pep talk, Fitch. I guess I’m just debating where I want my blog to go. I’ve spent the past year mostly talking about current events. Right now current events don’t interest me. I don’t want my blog to turn into a “dear diary” blog like the mommy blogs my wife reads. I can’t stand reading those types of blogs.
I’m just in a funk. I’ll be alright.

FITCH IS ALWAYS RIGHT!!!
How was that sir?
Mike, it might help to take a vacation from blogging. That’s what I did when I fell into a funk, and couldn’t find inspiration. I went away for a few months and when I came back, everyone welcomed me with open arms. It’s something to think about.

It is fun FIAR. And it is good healthy exercise for your brain. Without the interaction of others and the spirit of debate, it would be just as you descibe:
When blogs first started, they were primarily an online journal.
Being able to control and moderate the personality of your blog, puts you in touch with the excitement of the news columnist or the talk show host. You have the mini-media experience, which benefits your writing and your thinking.
