The Only Roadmap- W.W. IV
It’s strange how one war leads to the next. Germany’s loss in WWI lead to the rise of the Nazis seeking redress of supposed grievances. The Nazi machine overtook post-war Germany and sparked WWII. After another loss for Germany, the Allies, reluctant to enter into more direct conflict and confront the evil that was the Soviet Empire, settled into a half century of indirect proxy warfare between the superpowers-WWIII.
These three previous global conflicts laid the foundation for our current conflict-WWIV. After WWI, the Ottoman Empire was crushed and divied up between the victorious powers creating the Middle East map of today more or less. During the rise of the Nazi Germany, the Nazis secured influence and allies in the Middle East. The Nazis of Germany and the Islamofacsists of the time were a compliment to and fed off one anothers hatred of the Jews. After the defeat of Nazi Germany, a Jewish state, Israel, was formed. Even with the Nazis defeated, their ideology lived on and festered in the Middle East. The Soviets stepped in and filled the patron void left by the Nazis for the Islamofascists. The new Jewish state became the focus of the hatred for the Islamofascists. During the half-century of the Cold War (WWIII), the Islamofascists Arabs and the Israelis fought the proxy wars between the U.S. and the Soviets. Of course the Islamofacists were no match for the Isrealis militarily so they turned to unconventional warfare-terrorism, and the Soviets could not keep up with the U.S.
The use of terrorism by the Islamofascists has now led to our current conflict- WWIV. For the U.S, WWIV officially started on 9/11/2001, but has been fought mostly one sided by the Islamofascists since 1979 with Iran being the prime mover with assists from the Arab governments and other failed states. After 9/11, the U.S. was quickly able to defeat two states and hold territory on the borders of Iran. Israel has been locked in a conflict of their own at various levels of hostility. Iran with the direct help of Syria, has funded,trained, and sheltered scores of Hizbullah and Hamas terrorists along with Iraqi insurgents. Hizbullah and Hamas now control southern Lebanon and the Palestinian terrortories (oops, but I’ll keep the typo in) to launch attacks.
After continual provacations and attacks on its citizens, Israel seems to be ready to take the gloves off. News of the expanded war front is coming in fast and furious. Austin Bay and Michael Ledeen are providing some commentary. Euphoric Reality is tracking events on the ground and Iraq the Model has an Iraqi perspective. Iran and Syria will soon get the war that they have wanted for a very long time. But I don’t think they will have the victory they are looking for.
The U.S. and Israel are facing the same enemies. The Israeli front is threatening to go full bore exploding into a much larger conflict engulfing the entire Middle East and into Central Asia. Make no mistake this is a world war and no nation is safe including our own. The American homefront has been safely isolated from the ravages of warfare in previous world wars. 9/11 showed that this war could very well be fought on our own streets. With a combination of good luck and increased vigilence, we have not been hit since. Our nation is ripe with security lapses. The enemy and their sympathizers have taken up shop on our soil. They are living among us.
Over the past five years, I have tried not to paint with a too broad of brush when it comes to Muslims. There are many Muslims who want no part in this war. Unfortunately, they remain silent and look the other way. Others silently lend moral support to our enemies and work to undermine our nation during war. Still others openly advocate our destruction from within our borders.
I can not hold out the hope that the good, silent majority of Muslims will stand up against the Islamofascists. By their silence, they have enabled our enemy to strike out against our nation. They are part of the problem, not the solution. To me, all Muslims are the enemy until proven otherwise by their actions not by their empty words.
If we do not confront the evil that inhabits the Islamic faith, we will once again leave the seed of hatred from which the next world-wide conflict will spring forth. In the three global wars of the past century, the victors have pulled the final punch and left an enemy seed to grow unfettered. Will we have the foresight to crush that seed before it grows anew after this war is done?
I have no doubt that the U.S. and its allies will prevail in this conflict. But will the stage be set for the next? Nothing short of total victory both militarily and ideologically will ensure the long term peace. Islam, in its current state, must not survive.

I also appreciate your optimism. Looking at the shear number of our current enemy is starting to get depressing, and I will most likely be separated from my family for a year and a half coming up soon…I have to keep reminding myself that this is why I joined…to fight them.

This is the only portion where I disagree with you. Explaining the disagreement is deserving of it’s own post as well, so I’m not going to go into it right now. Aside from that, Rich, this is precisely the post I had in mind when I asked you to be a contributor. I mean, read my mind exactly the post.

SELF RESTRAINT IS FATAL

As a young person growing up in New York City, I was a member of Brit Trumpeldor of America, better known as the Zionist Youth Movement Betar, founded by the great Zionist leader, Ze”ev Jabotinsky. When I joined Betar at the age of 12, every potential member was required to enroll in the Tironut program. Tironut, or basic training, as it were, was an intensive series of lectures and seminars covering a wide range of topics including Jewish history, the history of the Zionist movement and the glorious legacy of Betar and the Jewish underground that valiantly battled the British during the mandatory regime, prior to the creation of the State of Israel.
I learned about a young Jew from Poland named Shalom Tabachnik, a/k/a Shlomo Ben Yosef, a member of Betar who came to live in the land of Israel and who settled on the northern settlement of Rosh Pina. On Thursday, April 21, 1938, the 20th day of Nissan 5698, Ben Yosef and two Betar colleagues attempted to defend the settlement of Rosh Pina from an impending Arab attack, emanating from the neighboring Arab village of Djani. An automobile carrying Arabs approached Rosh Pina. Ben Yosef and his two fellow Betarim stepped out on the road and tried to stop the automobile. A single shot was fired and the Arabs fled in panic.
A few hours after the incident the three young men were arrested by the British police. They gave themselves up without any struggle. “Despite the fact that not a single drop of blood was shed at Rosh Pina and despite the fact that the police knew very well that the three young men had only fired into the air in order to discourage the Arabs from passing through the settlement, the British decided to create a big “terrorist” incident out of the Rosh Pina affair. The very fact that Jews had resolved to withstand an Arab attack made them feel afraid. Their plan to frighten Jews from coming to Palestine would be endangered if Jews were to fight back. They knew very well that the Jews could put an end to the Arab “revolts” in a few days.” (Triumph on the Gallows, Itzhak Gurion, 1950)
On June 29, 1938 Ben Yosef was hanged on the gallows by the British authorities. His last words in a conversation with friends were, “Havlagah” (self-restraint) is fatal.”
Today I also thought of the brave and courageous defender of the settlement Tel Chai. I thought of Yosef Trumpeldor, for whom Betar is named. I thought of his efforts to defend Tel Chai against Arab attacks. No stranger to military conflicts, Trumpeldor was the highest ranking Jewish officer in the Czar’s army during the Russo-Japanese war of 1905. I thought of him and of his last words when he was gunned down by an Arab bullet while defending the settlement in 1920.
Today, I thought of the last words of Shlomo Ben Yosef and Yosef Trumpeldor when I read of Katyusha rocket attacks on cities in northern Israel. Besides Nahariya, it was reported that Rosh Pina and Tel Chai had been hit by rocket fire and that the airport in Rosh Pina was shut down. I thought of Shlomo Ben Yosef and Yosef Trumpeldor when I heard Ehud Olmert’s response to the rocket attacks by the Syrian backed Hizbollah militia in Lebanon. According to a news report from Arutz Sheva, “Olmert was clear that the multi-pronged attack, which involved ground forces as well as Katyusha rockets, was not an act of terror, but “an act of war” and said the Israeli response would be “very restrained but very, very painful.”
Seems like the word restraint keeps rearing its head. The Associated Press reported that, “U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for restraint. “We would not want to see an expansion, an escalation, of conflict in the region,” he said. Mr. Annan was joined by US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, who was quoted by Associated Press as saying, “All sides must act with restraint to resolve this incident peacefully and to protect innocent civilians and civilian infrastructure.” If we’ve learned anything from this two front war that threatens to explode like a powder keg, we’ve learned that the calls for restraint from world leaders only apply to Israel. Seems like the age old double standard concerning the actions of Israel are in full swing.
While the State of Israel engages Hizbollah terrorists on its northern border and Hamas terrorists on its southern border, let us remember the words of the young Betari from Rosh Pina. Let us remember the words of this simple Jew whose courage and bravery move us to tears. Let us remember the actions and examples that Yosef Trumpeldor set for his people and his beloved nation of Israel, so many years ago.
It is these axioms that must shape our destiny in the current military conflict. We must address the world clearly and unequivocally. We must shout from the rooftops, the words of Shlomo Ben Yosef. Yes, it is true. Self restraint is fatal. We know that self restraint only emboldens our enemies. We know that the Arab enemy mocks and ridicules Israel when self restraint is elevated to the level of a religious commandment. We know that only swift action without trepidation or hesitation can ensure our preservation.
The facts are clear and cannot be debated. Three Israeli soldiers are being held captive by our Arab enemy and eight Israeli soldiers lay dead as a result from the brazen attacks from Hizbollah. Jewish settlements, towns and cities are being barraged by Katyusha rocket attacks on our northern front and continued Kassam rocket attacks are being staged by our Arab enemy In Gaza. This is the time to throw off the yoke of “restraint”. Our survival and preservation as a people and nation are at stake. Now is the time conquer our proverbial nemesis, better known as fear of world opinion. Now is the time to reach out to the Almighty G-d of Israel.
Now is the time to know that Hashem marches into battle with us. As Jews, we are never alone. Hashem will be with us, if only we allow Him to be. If only we bend our collective necks to the yoke of Heaven and walk in His ways and remain faithful to His commandments. Hashem commands us to show no mercy on our enemies. We are commanded to fear only G-d and to treat our enemies accordingly. To engage in bold and decisive military actions that will permanently disable Hizbollah and Hamas. If we can summon up the strength to quash our own egos and accept Hashem’s dominion, the battle will be fought for us.
On this 17th day of Tammuz, may our prayers reach the Almighty G-d of Israel and may He protect His nation Israel.

Rich, here’s a brief summary of why I disagree that silence is complicity.
Think of a poor neighborhood overrun by gangs. Are the people of that neighborhood complicit in the gang warfare because they are too afraid to rise up and throw out the gangs? Clearly when a community takes to the streets to force out the gang it is the exception not the rule.
In a country under the thumb of an opressive dictators*t, it’s hard to find “Give me liberty or give me death” in the lexicon, because the “death” part seems so much more likely.
This is why we do need to be the world’s police. Just like the neighborhood folks will be more likely to have a good neighborhood if the police keep the block free of gangs than they would if left to their own resources, we need to keep the world free from thugs in power where the citizens cannot do it for themselves.
Add to that the fact that the best chance for survival is to join the army, or turn in “seditious” neighbors in return for favors, and you have people that would speak up, afraid to do so. Again, the gang or mob neighborhood model is useful. (I frequently find it useful to draw parallels of “big” things to “small” things.)
Then throw a very one sided media presentation, and dissenting views become even harder to come by. We can see, even here, where there IS a free exchange of ideas, how much the Mainstream media can influence perceptions. What about where there ISN’T a free exchange of ideas?
The problem, Rich, is one of opression, instead of freedom, not a particular religion, or even the perverse distortion of it.
Yes, believe it or not, that’s the short version.

Well, I disagree with your assertion, Mr. Fitch, or at least have a problem with it. Maybe you’ll agree with this. It’s my ever so arrogant opinion that even in the case of which you speak, if people aren’t standing up for themselves, and they get lumped in with the terrorists and catch a 500 lb Zarqawi buster, then I have no sympathy for them. There’s a saying I’ve heard before, “There are no innocent bystanders.” That is to say that if you are bystanding, then you aren’t innocent. If you got a bunch of terrorists operating in your little fifedom, and you do nothing to rid your fifedom of the the terrorists, then when your fifedom gets all blowed to hell and gone, you get no sympathy. I have another saying that I adopted from the movie “Major Payne.”

OK, fair enough on the collateral damage argument, but don’t you think that the shift in Iraq demonstrates that people side with those they view as less likely to kill them? I do. People there are becoming more and more willing to stand up to the terrorists becaus they are beginning to view them as less and less of a threat. Standing up to us, and the Iraqi Security force, on the other hand, is looking like a really stupid idea.
In Iran, which do you think people are more likely to view as a dangerous stance to take. Rebell against the ruling regime, or go along with them? Obviously, until such time as we go in there, kick some serious ass, and start to secure things down, they ain’t gonna pick the “revolt” option.

I think you raise a fair point. Any Muslim who would stand beside us an an ally is taking a huge risk. Extremely so in the middle east. But it boggles the mind why Muslims in this country remain silent and let groups like CAIR speak for them. I hope that a peaceful Muslim majority actually exists.
Does silence equal complicity? No, but, I just don’t think we can wait for them to stand up any longer. If they do not want to be part of this fight at this time, fine. They need to stand aside, stop whining about perceived infringements on their rights, and let us fight this war so that they can enjoy freedom in their home countries one day and make the needed changes to their faith.
The reformation of Islam is their responsibility. Using your example of a gang ridden neighborhood, after the police come in and dismantle the gangs, it remains the responsibility of the people to cooperate with the police, rebuild the neighborhood, and stay vigilant. If they don’t, the thugs will return. Muslims have not proven that they are up to the task. We see flickers in Iraq, but it’s still too early to tell. If I am wrong on this point, that would be a good thing.
